When the going gets weird...
…The weird turn pro. Or at least they decide to run for the state Senate seat held by New York’s most powerful Republican legislator. Fresh from the implosion of her political career in Saratoga Springs, the city’s one-term mayor apparently thinks she has enough moxie to make a run at Hollywood Joe Bruno’s recently abdicated seat presiding over the 43rd district.Valerie Keehn’s peculiar move comes after week’s worth of strange political happenings leading up to Bruno’s surprise announcement.
Just three days before Bruno yielded his position as senate majority leader, a veritable cavalcade of Spa City and county Dems decided to endorse his candidacy. These figures include everyone from the Brothers’ McTygue to Lee Kolesnikoff, the county’s Independence Party chairman. The bizarre gesture was obviously timed in coordination for Bruno’s announcement as a sort of thanks to the pugilist senator for the frequent bacon showers he’d bestow upon his district, which spans across Saratoga and Rensselaer counties.
“We offer our support and proudly endorse Joe Bruno,” said Tom McTygue, the former Democratic Public Works fixture, in a news release that was jotted out to the media Friday. “As far as we are concerned, Joe Bruno is the only candidate.”
The missive was also a clear message to Brian Premo, the one-time Republican who sought to unseat Bruno on the Democratic ticket: Don’t come sniffing around for donkey votes in this district. The message was also a slap in the face to the Saratoga County Democrats, who offered their endorsement to Premo last month.
And now Keehn comes along, just in time to complicate matters even further. Keehn has confided in the Post Star, the Saratogian and Times Union regarding her candidacy, which was rumored back in January when a TU columnist suggested she and city Supervisor Joanne Yepsen take a stab at unseating Bruno and state Assembly Minority Leader Jim Tedisco. So when Bruno’s message came down the pike Monday, it didn’t take long for the former mayor let out the bellowing yawp to reassemble Kamp Keehn and the Keehniacs.
“The wheels started turning and people started talking to me,” Keehn told the Saratogian Tuesday. “I immediately started talking to my closest confidants…I started making phone calls in earnest to people who could steer me in the right direction.”
Instead, these “confidants” –i.e. Public Safety flunkies Ron Kim and Eileen Finneran –pointed Keehn in the wrong direction. The right direction would have been the one leading her away from politics once and for all.
The direction Keehn is apparently taking involves torpedoing her party’s endorsed candidate in a vicious primary, where she can enrage half of the district’s constituents into voting for anyone or anything that runs against her. It’s sort of like the tactic she pulled during the 2007 election, where nearly half of the city’s Democrats would have elected an inanimate carbon rod were it to spell the doom of her mayoral run.
Update: The TU reports Yepsen has indeed tossed her hat in the ring and will begin collecting signatures. This creates an even odder dynamic because both Yepsen and Keehn draw from the same pool of voters. In a sense, we could see an implosion of the inter-party implosion, unless one of these candidates decides to take an improbable run at Tedisco’s seat.
Keehn’s likely opponent will be well-regarded state Assemblyman Roy McDonald, who Bruno all but anointed as his successor. Unlike Keehn, McDonald doesn’t have a political career marred by futile interparty battles, embarrassing verbal gaffs and a tendency to use 1,000 words to say essentially nothing. McDonald also has the advantage of being a Republican in a district that is still heavily weighted toward the GOP. It’s safe to say whoever goes up against the former Wilton supervisor will likely have their work cut out for them.
How will it all shake out? Well, Keehn will certainly find enough signatures to get her name on the ballot. She’ll then wage a painful primary against Premo, like by embracing the freak power constituents that powered her to the mayoral nomination in September. But this is as far as she’s capable of moving, unless the opposition candidate lands in prison or a mortuary before the election. The end result will be the 43rd landing safely with the Republicans.
Update: The TU is reporting Keehn has dropped from the race and will endorse Yepsen, which is certainly a mixed blessing for the city supervisor and a godsend for the county Dems. If Yepsen is successful in her bid, look for Keehn to resurface as her replacement on the County Board of Supervisors. In other news, the New York “behind the” Times reports three Democrats “including the mayor of Saratoga Springs” will be vying for Bruno’s seat, as a sharp-eyed reporter for the Post Star pointed out recently. Good work, Drew. They don’t pay you guys enough over there.
The state and county Democrats would be wise to jump into this fray early on, perhaps offering Keehn some sort of consolation prize in the form of a cushy job in the Legislature; anything to ensure she bows out of politics for good. But with Keehn on the loose, they’ll ultimately squander a perfect opportunity to both control the senate and banish the legacy of Hollywood Joe once and for all.

Don't discount Joanne Yepsen! She would really give McDonald a run for his money!
Poor Val, these are the kind of thoughts that goes through a womans mind during their "change of life".
Ho,
One word! BULLSHIT!
This will be good! If only we could get that asshole McTygue to throw his hat in the ring. Now that would prove that he is no democrat people can relate to. Keehn only lost by 500 votes! She got 4000 in 2007 while McTygue the one who spent most of his time to make sure she lost got his ass crushed by 2000 votes! Head to head she would kick Mctygue's ass.
McTygue tried to run against Bobby D'Andrea only to be humiliated. Never tried again!
I doubt she'll actually run. They should bypass the election altogether and just let MacDonald start today.
11:43,
Yepsen would at least stand a sporting chance. She can at least point to her re-election as evidence of her viability as a candidate. And she could actually draw voters from the full spectrum of Democrats, unlike Keehn.
2:18,
In one word, ELABORATE.
2:27,
See the problem with Keehn folk such as yourself is that you still haven't learned that the election of 2007 was never Keehn versus McTygue. And it's exactly why folks of your ilk will never manage to win much of anything, other than a lot of criticism from bloggers such as myself. Common. It's been almost seven months and you still haven't figured out that Keehn wasn't running against McTygue? The voters figured it out pretty easily when they elected Johnson and Scirocco into office. The sad thing is you still can't figure our the bi-partisan system, which is why Keehn won't amount to anything other than a pathetic footnote in city politics.
8:42,
Read 2:27's entry. Do you still think this group isn't delusional enough to make run? Here's their logic in equation form:
1.McTygue=Bruno
2.Bruno=McDonald(or any Republican)
3.Keehn got more votes than McTygue
4.Therefore Keehn beats McDonald.
Crazy? One-hundred percent. Realistic? Not a chance. Sad mantra of this failed movement? Definitely.
What exactly has this McDonald clown done? Why should the public be convinced to just hand it over to this guy? If he runs and wins fine! But why shouldn't anyone else run?
I also think you don't get the fact that McTygue did run against Keehn! He just went by the name of Kuczynski and then Boyd. This was a totally backed movement on McTygue's part that was defeated.
He used his resources to get rid of Keehn. It worked in the general election because his loyalists were republican as much as democrat. He convinced enough to vote against Keehn.
HO: It's pretty clear who you're against. Who are you for?
Anon 407
You can write sorta, can you read? Perhaps reading a newspaper might answer your questions. Being informed is integral to being a good citizen.
AND Tom McTygue is old news - he's moved on. Why can't you(and others still ranting about him) LET IT GO!
You are so yesterday.........
4:47,
To be honest, I'm not really 'for' anyone. I've been duped by far too many supposedly well-meaning politicians in my life, and have become quite grizzled to their ceaseless rhetoric.
But while we're on the topic, I think either Russo or McDonald would be a good addition for the 43rd. Say what you will about Bruno -and I've offered my share of criticism of the guy -his departure is going to leave quite a vacuum in this area no matter who takes over. Russo would bring a good connection to Gillibrand and federal ducats thereof. I also think Gillibrand stands a better chance at winning than Treadwell, a Pataki Republican, come November. Russo is a successful fellow with deep ties to the area, who only recently turned to politics. He'd be a fine democratic candidate, more so than Premo in my opinion.
McDonald is a straight talker and just about as honest as politicians come. He'll appeal very well to the working and middle-class voters. While everyone and their mothers were banging the drum to war back in 2002, McDonald was already speaking about the vets that would come home, and how we should make that a primary concern. And this was as a freshman in the Assembly, when it was very unpopular attitude to take as a politician, much less a Republican.
4:07,
What exactly has anyone in the Assembly minority done? Answer: not much. They can't do much, aside from support their causes when they come up, pitch bills that will go nowhere without Silver's support and scream bloody murder anytime someone steps out of line with their politics.
And if you think McTygue orchestrated Keehn's downfall, you're really out of touch with the common, middle-of-the-line voter(much as Keehn certainly was). The mayor did everything in her power to ostracize all but a few in her party. That few -the folks I refer to as the 'freak power' movement -are indeed tenacious at the polls. But when you're a minority in a minority party, this doesn't carry you very far in a general election.
Keehn dedicated her administration to destroying McTygue in any way she could. Whether it was because McTygue was doing the same to her is irrelevant; two wrongs don't make a right.
And speaking of what exactly has this clown done, what exactly did Keehn do while she was in office? How many affordable housing units did she add? Did she lower the tax burden for working class homeowners? Did she add to the so-called green belt? Did she do anything other than fight with McTygue? Name one pledge she made in 2005 that actually came to fruition under her stewardship.
Go ahead and blame it on McTygue's political dickering. But the truth of the matter is he was only one vote on the council during her term. There were four others she could have appealed to, one of whom was her own personal lap dog. But she couldn't, because she simply couldn't build bridges over the distances in opinion; and, in fact, spent more time burning them.
I've explained this in the past(probably even to you), but I continue to get this bullshit McTygue argument surfacing as an excuse for Keehn's abject failure as a mayor. Strangely, it also sounds as though the Keehniacs point to her contribution toward unseating McTygue as her only success, which is truly a sad claim for any political group to make.
As a former elected official, I know first-hand how winning an election, ANY election, can go to your head. Poor Val. Honey, NO ONE IN RENNSELAER COUNTY IS GOING TO VOTE FOR YOU. Please, focus on your strengths and values, raise money for old people, help the Back Stretch Association, sweep Caroline Street, please, anything but public office where responsibility is required.
Halleluja--we now have a new member of the local Democratic party (who's not named McTygue, Boyd, Hank, etc) that is willing to stand up to the Keehn Kult.
Joann Yepsen is quoted in today's papers as saying she will in fact run for this Senate seat.
How about that, Val? I guess you were expecting a coronation on this?
Will you now aim your standard 'search & detroy' tactics against her? A woman who wasn't mean to you the way that big bully Tommy was sooooo mean and impolite to you?
Maybe you'd be better off just applying for Skip's old dog-catcher job. Because you really don't want to go thru with this massive amount of ridicule you are about to absorb now, do you?
Who knows who is pictured on your blog?

Agreed. Absolutely. Mike Russo is the only candidate in my opinion.
He is smart (The others aren't), He has COMMON sense, he is thoughtful and LISTENS CAREFULLY (without screaming at you), he gets the job done -- sees what needs to be done and completes the task, he is a Democrat which will come in handy as the Senate works with the Assembly to pass bills. Mike Russo is well respected by many, many. many people in the area -- including the unions. By comparison, he has more connections than all of the others put together. While this seat represents Saratoga Springs, it is a bigger district than our little bubble here and Roy McDonald will not be able to get anything for our district because he doesn't work well with the NYS Assembly and the Democrats will eventually be taking the Senate, so what can a minority junior member do for Saratoga -- zippo. (Except for maybe, more hot headed screaming)
Hey Horatio,
I read in June 24ths Roll Call in a piece called The Farm Team: GOP Could Turn to a Winner in Southern Tier, by Josh Kurtz the following:
"Roll Call Staff Republicans are high on their challenger in the upstate 20th district, Sandy "Treadwell. Treadwell has an interesting résumé to say the least. Born in London, he is the grandson of a founder of General Electric and spent several years as an author and writer for Sports Illustrated. More recently, he has been New York secretary of state and the state GOP chairman. "
"Treadwell has poured almost $1 million of his own money into the race, but the woman he is trying to defeat, freshman Rep. Kirsten Gillibrand (D), is a prodigious fundraiser who is favored for now to hold the Republican-leaning seat. Even if Gillibrand wins big in November, she will probably be a perennial target in a district that runs from the North Hudson Valley all the way up to the Adirondack Mountains. Potential future GOP candidates include Assemblywoman Betty Little and Saratoga County District Attorney Jim Murphy. "
I get it that the DA isn't running for Congress, although I think his father in law was the Congressman (King) for the district and The DA has done great stuff with cops and stopping crime before it happens by targeting young kids with school programs, etc...and is popular with dems and reps and independents. He seems bipartisan in the way the office looks at how to make this place safe. Why isn't he running for Senate? I assume he must live in Bruno's district if he is the Saratoga County DA. What is up with him?
If political myopia isn’t a real disease, it should be. The thought of any pseudo-intellectual from Saratoga Springs winning in this Senate District is off the charts on the unintentional comedy scale. Saratoga Springs is nothing like any other part of the district. The thought of Yepson tooling around North Troy in her sports car or Keehn talking policy with an Italian from Mechanicville just sets me to giggling.
As far as McDonald goes, he has proved amazingly adept at working with the Dems in the Assembly. He got funding for a Washington-Saratoga open space initiative by teaming up with a powerful Long Island Democrat and used a similar strategy to get funding for his Autism task force.
By the way, being a member of the majority party doesn’t seem to have much cachet in the Assembly. Can’t think of a single bit of pork that Bob Reilly has brought home for Clifton Park or Colonie. That’s even more curious given that Colonie is teetering on the edge of a republican caused fiscal disaster and now has a democrat Supervisor. About all Bob has been able to secure for them is the right to a second property tax bill this year. Truth is that when you talk about the Assembly, the majority are downstaters and the minority are upstaters, regardless of political affiliation.
6:28,
I sincerely doubt Murphy will run for any higher office. His problem is the same problem that faces every district attorney: you can't win 'em all. And those ones you lose are usually enough to sink your campaign. In Murphy's case, he has a predilection for plea deals that has often drawn him fire from both sides of the isle.
Unlike McDonald, Little has enjoyed time in the majority and -no pun intended -done relatively little. Perhaps her greatest claim to fame was an ill-fated push to put cell towers on every quarter mile post on the Northway.
2:26,
Russo is definitely an interesting candidate, which is one of the reasons I was chagrined to hear of the others who are considering a good drag through the 43rd.
6:13,
And how are these "silly scribblings" a "cheap imitation," and of what? Do tell. This should be interesting. In the meantime, please find yourself another corner of the Internet in which to skulk. Might I suggest here. It's more your speed; more your intellect. Enjoy!
Just in: Keehn is out and is throwing her support behind Yepsen.
Do you poeple know ANYTHING about Mr Russo?
You must be kidding me...
mike who???? hahahah
well, he certainly thinks he is well known. I would rather him run for a local office first so we could see how he handles the pressure of a campaign.
The bottom line is Kirsten needs mike to stay where he is, she cannot afford to lose yet another Saratoga representative. ALSO, do not forget Kirsten has history and a fantastic relationship with both Val and Joanne. I wouldn't assume anything regarding Kirsten and who she is supporting.
Mike's choice to run right now in a campaign year for his employer is extremely unfortunate.
HO 9:04:
Maybe you think you can fool some of the people some of the time with these silly scribblings headed by a ripped off copy of Ralph Steadman's iilustration of Dr. Gonzo from the Rolling Stone series, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, by the immortal Hunter S. Thompson, but the purloined photo of Thompson himself seems like just a cruel reminder of how truly crappy your writing is.
Not even a rhino-sized dose of acid would make a reader think your sour, whiny blog belongs on the same planet as the inspired work Thompson produced. That must be why you chopped off the second half of Thompson's famous quote, "When the going gets weird, the weird turn pro."
You ain't no pro, bro. Just a cheap imitation of a real master.
Russo shows up to all the functions that Gillibrand blows off! He has over a million dollars raised tells me someone big is behind him!
Yepsen is small potatoes! She has no record to speak of at the county. McDonald is well known and would crush her straight up!
And for some odd reason, my "sour, whiny blog" is enough to keep you logging on at a furious pace. Shall I count how many times I've logged your IP this week? Nah. That would just embarrass you and diminish your already lacking point.
Like I've asked -and you've ignored -how exactly have I aspired to be a "cheap imitation of a real master." Is it the one photo? Would you like me to change that photo? Would that make my writing more inspiring for you?
Oh wait, I forgot. You don't read. Or at least you're retarded eyes don't see past the post title, where the second part of Thompson's immortal quote is listed. You're a true inspiration for birth control.
Now please take a moment to go fuck yourself and allow the rest of us cognizant beings to discuss matters that don't involve spreading manure over intelligent dialog.
McTygue endorsing Bruno just goes to show he is no real democrat. The ties between him and Bruno are plain to see and it explains why they are both under investigation. He is being forced out and McTygue knows that if Bruno is out the axe is coming down soon with Bruno possibly throwing him under the bus to save his own ass.
As for the rest of this nonsense, Roy McDonald will bury these candidates the dems are putting out there.
Mamie,
Any investigation of Bruno ended the minute he decided against running. Actually, a column by the Daily Gazette's Carl Strock on Thursday really illuminated this point. Here's an excerpt:
"In any event, I do remember those things -- that the senator got paid by private parties, out of public view, and dispensed public favors to those parties without disclosing the relationship.
I remember that he remains under investigation by the FBI, though I have little expectation that the investigation will ever result in an indictment, if only because it's up to the U.S. attorney, a loyal Republican waiting for a judgeship, whether to present the case to a grand jury."
If you're interested, I can post the rest of the column, but that about sums it up.
As for McTygue, I've always doubted the reality of an FBI investigation of his practices. What I didn't doubt was reports of federal investigators probing the DPW. It would only make sense considering the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission's investigation over the Smith debacle. In an election year, it's very easy to blur the lines between a federal investigation and an FBI investigation.
To date, we've heard nothing further about the so-called FBI investigation rumor after it was turned fact by a certain shoddy Metroland reporter, who quite deliberately angled his initial story with flat-out distortions of fact. We've also heard nothing further about the supposed DEC investigation that was so broadly reported in 2007. I've already scheduled a blog entry about both of these subjects. Stay tuned...
Hey 6:43,
Blow it out your ass. Whoever Horatio is; he/she is obviously well informed and well intentioned. And some of us ENJOY reading this blog-much more than the local paper.
And HO, it was horrifically ironic that Mamie would have the next post after you described your readers as cognizant beings who espouse intelligent dialogue.
Small r
HO and Small r:
Your idea of "well informed . . . will intentioned . . . intelligent dialogue" (or is it "dialog"?) is impressive, indeed.
It begins with "spreading manure" and ends with "Blow it out your ass."
Can't wait to see your explanation of the "difference between a federal investigation and an FBI investigation."
small 'r,'
Thanks for the support man. I'm quite aware of who this loser is, and taking steps now to rectify the situation.
5:00,
Well, you're back again. And reading now too. So I see you're improving. Next up, bringing something to the table. Because as it stands now, you've brought nothing but your cheap, tawdry low-brow attitude. I'll make you a deal: You post on topic and I'll publish your comments. If you can't follow this simple instruction, you're free to form your own blog. Call it iSaratoga-sucks for all I care. But I'm done posting your garbage. In fact, I'm considering deleting these posts that have interrupted a perfectly civil conversation.
In closing, screw off. It shouldn't be too hard, given your vast ability in doing as such. When you grow an intellect, feel free to chime in. Otherwise, toodles!
Ho,
Getting a little crusty ,I see. If you start deleting comments you will have just those few one sided views entering posts. Is that what you want? How do you deny people that have a different point of view?
Also , how can you shrugg off the idea of investigations that are real! These have been verified by official sources of the FBI.
Mamie,
Plenty of people disagree with me here. And that's fine. I encourage differing view points. But with that said, let me make this analogy: Say you invite someone over to your house for a party. The person walks through the door, purposely dumps their drink on your good carpet, calls you an asshole, and starts pissing in your prize azaleas. Are you going to let this freak stay? In my world, they can enjoy the view from outside.
Posting here is a privilege of which I own exclusive rights. Out of my somewhat dogged embracing of free speech, I allow even disparaging comments to slip through my filter. Really the only ones I don't post are foul-mouthed and libelous. With that said, I can only take so much urine in my flowerbed before I start bouncing people off curbs.
Now onto your point: the so-called investigation was "verified by official sources of the FBI?" Says who? That hack David King? Every respectable paper that reported this stated the truth: ALLEGATIONS of an FBI investigation; some I believe even called them rumors. The facts are this: the FBI never confirmed any investigation and there's been no indictment. So as far as I'm concerned, it's a dead issued McTygue's detractors like throwing out there, almost as if the more talk there is about it, the more legs it will get and eventually, they'll get the resolution they wanted.
Whatever way you cut it, McTygue was a big fish in a really small pond. While he'll certainly be remembered in Saratoga Springs and even the county, he means little to the outside world --including the feds. I will wager you any amount that nothing will ever come of this alleged investigation. But you can read all about it in a couple of months.
If you mean we will read in a couple of months McTygue is running for office again, that's a real hoot! He is done whether it's public safety, or public works he will fail. Maybe if there was a position for public nuisance he would stand a chance. The people down here in City hall hate the son of a bee.
that last post was me!

Horatio you're talking out both sides of your mouth.
I personally like the smutty side the best.
Christ, that photo of Bruno --- giving a salute with his outstretched arm -- reminds me of the old pics of Hitler speaking in front of the faithful in the Munich beer halls, circa 1935.
Heil Bruno!
Mamie your unhappiness and failed personal relationship only underscores your bitterness. Maybe after you have managed to hold on to a boyfriend for more than two weeks you will be qualified to lecture adults who have been happily married for 20 years or more. Until then Mamie you can whine to the latest boy toy you find at 3am and complain about how unfair everything is.
PS: The drunker the guy, the better shot at getting lucky you’ll have.
Sorry Horatio! This is not smut, it's fact! Men are all talk, especially with the tongue. Read it anyway you wish.

Mamie, it sounds like I hit the sweet spot or in your case a raw nerve.
patrick southworth made history today july 7th 2008. He handed in 1573 signatures on his petition. That has never happened before in a NYS Democratic Committee race. He did it the right way going door to door not at a farmer's Market. This is the type of hard work and teamwork he brings to the table. It also show his base is large in and out of Saratoga Springs.
Southworth's wife is a horse's ass! They have made a mockery of the political process here in Ballston Spa. Now he's hanging out with McTygue who has made a mess of the city committee in Saratoga. I guess I will start spreading the information around here about McTygue's antics in Saratoga.
